Sally was raised in Tauranga, completed her LLB at Otago University, and was admitted to the Bar in September 1979. After four years with an Auckland law firm, two years with a firm in London and a further four years back in Auckland in banking law, Sally practised at Miller Poulgrain in 1990 and 1991 before stopping work to raise a family. Sally returned to the firm in 2012 to work in estate administration.
Sally is married to Rodney, enjoys playing the flute with various groups in Thames, trailing Rodney at running events (the shorter, slower versions), is a College of Midwives Disputes Resolution Committee member, runs a book club and film group and has now given up school boards for a new role in Thames Coast Kiwi Care.
